Go with the flow

Smart storage will go to waste with an impractical layout, so carefully consider the placement of your cabinetry and appliances – doing so with the doors open – advises interior designer Darren Palmer, brand ambassador for Häfele. Save space for a discreet bin drawer divided into waste, recycling and compost, if required. Then work out how much bench space you’ll actually need – if you have a large island, can you get away with a full wall of cabinetry? If not, “extra cupboards at the back of the island are always a good idea”, says Lisa.
