INSPIRED BY THIS

home’s location on Hope Island, Queensland, and homeowners Mel and Dave’s desire for a clean-lined, modern space, the House Rules teams pulled out all the stops – even integrating a vintage boat (left) into their backyard design! They met the rule for making a castaway island for the owners’ two boys, and delivered a playful space.

POOL ZONE

The existing kidney-shaped pool (top left) was brought into the now with oversized Travertine Silver unfilled bullnose pavers from Three Balls Red – but it missed the mark with judge Wendy Moore, who considered them too bright and hard for the space. “When you have a large area in a sunny spot, chose materials that will absorb some of the light, rather than reflect,” she advises. “Darker colours, textures and mixed materials would all work together to make this space easier on the eye.”

PATIO

The vast amounts of space in this garden led to the creation of ample ‘chill-out zones’; here, a built-in bench seat (top right) meets the request to ‘Design a haven for body and soul’, while finds from Early Settler, including the Salu coffee table and a selection of pretty scatter cushions, help to deliver softness and comfort.

PLAY AREA

An old boat has found a new lease of life moored in a kids’ sandpit (left) – a wonderful way to fire up any child’s imagination!
