HORTICULTURIST AND VICTA AMBASSADOR ADAM WOODHAMS SHARES HIS EXPERT ADVICE ON HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR PATCH OF GRASS INTO A LUSH GREEN OASIS 1. Don’t cut grass too low While this might seem like an obvious tip, it’s often the biggest mistake people make on their patch of turf. “Grass provides shade and natural cooling to the roots and soil, and longer grass will provide a much softer surface for kids to run around on,” says Adam. 2. Mulch as you mow Run the mower in ‘mulching mode’ to make mowing faster and easier, with no stopping-andstarting to empty the catcher. “It’s like giving the lawn a light organic feed every time you mow,” adds Adam. 3. Aerate “Perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots will help them grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn,” says Adam. But be warned – lawn corers (aeration machines) are pricey to purchase, so consider hiring the equipment you need to get the job done before summer.
