AFTER FOUR YEARS at the helm of Poho Flowers, and with events such as Myer’s Spring Summer Runway under their belt, owners Ed West and Dan Scala’s work has gained a reputation for being contemporary, asymmetrical and in high demand. HB sat down with the creative duo to learn a little more about the story behind one of Sydney’s most admired flower shops.

owning it

“We’re growing something here that’s us, and that has our stamp on it,” says Dan, admitting it took some time to find and finesse their signature style. Today, their repertoire includes everything from sweet bouquets that fill their shopfront to large-scale installs lining fashion runways.

the history

The pair is Poho’s third generation of owners. The business itself has been around for almost 15 years, making it a local institution. “I started coming here as a customer. I was shopping here weekly, so that was my first foray into floristry,” says Ed, who owned a florist shop before this one, learning on the job.

seasonal tips

Hosting the family Christmas this year? “Keep the flowers simple,” suggests Ed. “From a textural and longevity point of view, natives really embody an Australian Christmas – and don’t forget the foliage.”
