5 MINUTES WITH ARTIST: Milky Dent
HB CHATS TO MILLY DENT, A CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS ARTIST WHO SPECIALISES IN THE FINE ART OF PORCELAIN MAKING
How did you get started and what do you love about the process?
“I took a ceramics class as part of my design degree and I just really loved working with the material. The clay responds beautifully to how you touch it and kind of records the way that you use it and how you control the process.”
You recently visited Jingdezhen, China – known as the porcelain capital. What did you learn about the practice of ceramics and how has it influenced your craft?
“They have a thriving ceramics scene for young artists – I discovered lots of cool new ceramic design work that I hadn’t seen before because they aren’t accessible online. For me, it was interesting because I’ve built my business on Instagram, but in China that platform is so irrelevant. I was so impressed by the efficiency and attention to detail.”
What are your favourite pieces in your home and why?
“I own a couple of special artworks by two close friends, one work is an abstract painting by Claire Johnson and the other is by Evi O of a jellyfish. I gave them some of my ceramics and they gave me their beautiful art.”
You’ve set the table, now who are your dream dinner party guests?
“In a dream world [singer/rapper] Anderson Paak, [installation artist] Laila Gohar, [designer] Evi O, [singer] Syd and [Queer Eye’s] Jonathan Van Ness.”
What projects are you working on?
“Most of all I’m excited to show my new work developed in Jingdezhen at Saint Cloche Gallery in Sydney in February next year!”
