Colour trends: 2020 vision The hottest hues to watch out for
THE COLOUR FORECASTS ARE IN, AND THE FUTURE IS BOLD, BRAVE AND SOPHISTICATED
ELECTRIC PALETTE
Coastal style is no longer clinging to washed-out shades of sky-blue, but ushering in an updated primary version with wow-factor. This dramatic take on blue from Wattyl is imbued with nostalgia, nodding to eclectic interiors of the 1970s. And best of all, the youthful hue pops just as much in real life as on an Instagram feed, making it feel unexpectedly modern. Style it in line with HB’s New Wave Modern trend by pairing vintage silhouettes in bold blue with timber, leather and – believe it or not – even more dynamite colour. Warning: it is not for the faint of heart.
MONOCHROME MAGIC
Understated beauty is the crème de la crème of interiors in 2020, that’s best achieved with pared-back yet playful design. “For instant French glamour, make a nod to the Paris Nouveau trend and follow the ‘less is more’ rule to allow feature pieces to shine,” says HB style editor Fiona Gould.
FEMININITY GOES BOLD
Baby-pink throws and coral paint shades are no longer the definers of femininity, as demonstrated here by Haymes. In hues that complement HB’s own Red Velvet trend, they’re an evolution away from Millennial Pink overdose. How to make it work? Saturate your home with equally rich materials such as marble and polished brass. For the kitchen, try an attention-grabbing lacquered cabinet, while a red feature-wall in the bedroom will say ‘atmosphere’.
SERENE SCENE
Calming tones of sage and moss provide a contemporary alternative to neutrals, as seen in this look from Dulux. Haymes Colourist Wendy Rennie concurs that green is set to feature in Australian homes: “The connection with the environment [is] intrinsic to the concept of finding balance in life with a minimal footprint,” she says. Dial up the texture with indoor plants and natural weaves.
