Ed’s letter Sarah is making the most of the long summer days
Summer in Australia comes into full force in February. Long, sultry days that blur into evening, drinks on the deck, slides, sunshine and that permanent sunscreen sheen. And, at home, doors flung open if you’re by the coast, or latched shut with aircon blazing, for those of us more landlocked. I’ll be spending this month dreaming of my forever home (we’re in the market to buy), with the ubiquitous pool the No.1 inclusion on my husband’s wish list. For something that’s supposed to be in every Australian backyard, it’s in very few for sale in my neighbourhood. With it looking like we might have to install one ourselves, it’s perfect timing to explore how to make a pool happen – check out the feature on page 132, and find out how much it’s going to cost.
Also this month, we’re taking a trip over to the Greek isles. Inspired by her recent holiday (a destination-wedding-meets-belated-honeymoon for our very deserving style editor), Fiona has re-created that tantalisingly beautiful Grecian feel in an inspiring decorating feature, from page 38. The fresh, bright white-on-white palette, with hints of cooling blues with lots of texture, brings a sense of calm and serenity. It hits just the right note for interiors at this time of year. To continue the island vibe, we celebrate the flavours of the Mediterranean, with a delicious Greek feast (page 142).
And, for the first time in quite some time, we’re sharing our Magic Makeovers special in this issue – a bumper collection of 10 rooms set to inspire you to update your space. At HB, we’re all about discovering the possibilities of your home – and these projects highlight just how much life can change, once that little reno is done. Sometimes a few tweaks can really change the function of a room, and in that way, have a real impact on your lifestyle – like the formerly drab storage area that was reinvented as a bedroom-meets-nursery, on page 168.
