Greg, architect, director of SAOTA, ARRCC and OKHA, his wife Nancy, mental health practition­er, and their children Zwiki, 21, Luca, 17 and Shama, 13, plus their Boston terriers, Blue and Lola.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST RESTORATIO­N CHALLENGE?

Greg: “Building with earth was challengin­g but very rewarding. The building has an

authentici­ty that is very unusual.”

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE?

“I love the poplar furniture and screens that we designed.”

YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM?

“Oddly enough our favourite space is the courtyard outside of the kitchen. We spend long evenings here. It’s quite magical.”

1. A clumsily constructe­d concrete staircase was removed and replaced with a contempora­ry fabricated staircase, with a laser-cut screen, designed by Jaco.
2. Greg and Nancy sit at the permanent glass and steel table, inspired by a tree stump found in the garden.
3. The original yellowwood ceiling beams dominate the living room.
4. Greg fashioned a shower out of the original chimney in the bathroom.
5. A collection of West German ceramicwar­e in the guest house.
6. Creating a series of terraces, and planting a substantia­l number of trees, Greg reclaimed dusty spaces around the home.
7. Tapestries hang in a corner of the master bedroom.
