THE OPEN-PLAN HUB
grand plan
An open-plan living area need not be sparse and overwhelming. “Create division with vertical storage treatments, such as an open-shelf credenza,” says interior designer Jodi York, director of Studio York Architects. “The [open] design creates a wall to section off the space and transparent shelves let natural light flow.” Use a large rug to zone areas and achieve intimacy with cosy underfooting. “Place at least the front feet of furniture on the rug and create a focal point with an ottoman,” says interior designer Tahn Scoon, founder of Tahn Interiors.
mood lighting
When lighting a large area, it’s easy to fall into the trap of a broad-spectrum bulb to illuminate it all. Instead, use a series of light fixtures. “A bold pendant light over the dining zone will anchor the space and draw the eye up,” says Jodi. “Floor lamps also pair well with an occasional chair for a reading nook.” If the ceiling height is limited, use downlights. “Downlights on dimmers present the chance to adjust lighting levels depending how you use the space,” says Lydia.
future-proof
Moving between zones can mean heavy foot traffic, so invest in quality flooring. “The best flooring for open-plan living areas is timber,” says Tahn. “It’s hard-wearing and easy to clean, yet remains warm and tactile underfoot. It’s also a base from which to layer rugs, allowing you to add texture, colour and comfort.”
colour crush
“The palette should be harmonious to, but not necessarily the same as, the space as a whole,” says Tahn. “If the dining area is olive green, your living area might be a muddy-toned mustard. It complements the green while giving the room its identity.” To play it safe, try a neutral base with contrasting accent colours.
hidden wonder
Taking a walk through any living area should instantly transport you into the lives and travels of its occupants. “Ornaments and decor are important in removing the starkness of open spaces, as they supply personality,” says Lydia. “It’s great to introduce talk-about pieces that give a sense of comfort and a lived-in feel.”
OPEN-PLAN LAYOUT
There are many configurations you can choose for an openplan layout, but a good rule of thumb is to section off a seating zone with a large rug and sofa (above). Add a mix of table lamps for ambient light and a directional floor lamp for task lighting. >
