THE COSY SEASON

-

There’s something so refreshing about a change in season, and autumn’s gentle turn into winter would have to be one of my favourite season switches. It’s that chill in the air while the sun still shines, a desire to dive into drawers packed with chunky throws and returning home after a long Sunday walk with the dog to the welcoming aroma of a roast that’s been slow cooking for hours. Although summer will probably always have my heart (I’m a sucker for lazy swims in the sea), winter really is a magical time of year. And it’s an especially good season for decorating; perfect for dipping in to deep colour and warm and cosy textures, or adding lovely layers, such as those throws that are not only fabulous for jazzing up a sofa but make snuggling up, post roast, to watch the latest Netflix obsession a real treat. Think of this time of year as a kind of a reverse spring refresh.

And in this issue, our first of the new season, we have plenty to inspire. From page 38, we show how one of the most enduring and chic palette bases, white, can work wonders in winter through tactile texture, unexpected forms, and tones that take this classic to new places. And then there’s our beautiful cover star

(which we couldn’t quite resist), a space designed by esteemed US interior designer Mark D. Sikes. Mark has a unique knack of creating inviting rooms and homes that really are the definition of relaxed sophistication. His latest book, More Beautiful, celebrates his take on classic American style and from page 24, he shares some of his stunning spaces and ideas about what makes a room beautiful.

Beautiful rooms abound in this issue, including the incredible bathrooms in our Bathroom Lookbook that tap into three key looks we’re loving at the moment – classic, contemporary and colour. They are just gorgeous. And, of course, there are those rooms in the stunning homes of our talented homeowners (from page 50) that all celebrate a unique sense of style, capturing a signature beauty that only the people who live in these very special spaces could have created. For as Mark says in More Beautiful: “When you celebrate the little things more often and surround yourself with what you truly adore, you’ll find that your whole world becomes infinitely more beautiful.” I’ll raise a full-bodied shiraz to that (hello winter!).
