After 30 years in their classic Edwardian home in Melbourne’s north-east, Maryann and Robert were ready to upgrade. Enlisting Olivia Cirocco of GIA Bathrooms & Kitchens to devise a raft of fresh finishes throughout, a priority was transforming their main bathroom. “Originally the shower was located next to the door, which created a narrow pathway into the bathroom and made the space feel quite small,” says Olivia, whose brief was to allow more room for storage, with a larger shower to enhance the sense of space. However, working with a long, narrow floor area and preserving an exquisite original window presented quite the challenge. “This limited where we could relocate plumbing and meant the shower needed significant clearance from the timber window, to prevent water damage,” says Olivia. The inspired solution was to have a wet area with a freestanding bath under the window and a shower on the other side. “This ticked the box for a larger shower area and left plenty of space for a generous vanity near the entrance, teamed with ample recessed head-height storage,” she adds. The layout celebrates the stained-glass window and bath, while the soft palette adds a spacious feel. “We wanted a bathroom we could enjoy for the foreseeable future,” says Maryann. “The new timeless look has exceeded our expectations.”
