Calm and classic
A TONAL MIX OF MATERIALS CREATES A LUXURIOUS, RELAXED SPACE IMBUED WITH TIMELESS APPEAL
When Andrea and husband David began planning a major overhaul of their main bathroom, they wanted to eschew fleeting trends in favour of a classic look which would tie in with the rest of their updated home overlooking Sydney Harbour. “The old bathroom we were renewing had green marble floors that I am sure were popular when they were installed but had dated quickly and I wanted to make sure we didn’t make the same mistake,” says Andrea. To help devise an enduring scheme, the couple enlisted Shellie Nielsen of NN Collective. The brief was twofold; to create a sense of luxury with a freestanding bath and underfloor heating, yet as the main bathroom is primarily used by the couple’s two children Hannah, 12, and Max, 10, it also needed to be functional, practical and easy to clean. The inspiration for the pared-back palette came via Andrea’s love of terrazzo floors and natural timber, which she says “hides a lot of sins”. To open up the large, slender room, without it feeling cavernous, the bath was moved to the widest section of the space and the shower switched to the narrow end. “The double vanity was positioned in the centre, so it’s a feature as you walk in, with the custom mirror above helping make the space feel wider,” explains designer Shellie. Two years in, the couple feel it looks just as good as the day it was installed and it’s been a joy to use ever since. “The heated floors were a bit of a splurge but they’re great to have and we all love using the bath,” reflects Andrea.
