CARE FACTOR
In harsher environments, planting in spring or early autumn is recommended, otherwise, natives can be planted all year round.
“Like all plants, they’ll need water until they’re established,” says Luke.
Mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and keep the weeds down. “I like to use a light, natural pine mulch,” says Ben Hutchinson. “It breaks down nicely over time to improve the soil quality, and generally needs to be topped up once a year.”
A yearly prune will help keep plants looking fresh and encourage growth – prune monthly in a more formal, exotic setting – or follow Ben’s lead and leave it to the birds. “The rosellas prune my Westringias and they do a spectacular job,” he laughs.
Other than that, there’s not much else to do other than sit back and admire your handiwork. We did promise low-maintenance, after all! >
