Quality control

While aesthetics are important, selecting dining furniture that will live a long life means paying attention to the nuts and bolts. “For full timber chairs, look at the junctions of where the back connects to the seat and legs. This is a pressure point and poorly made chairs will often start cracking there from early on. It’s also good to look out for upholstered chairs that are ‘corner blocked’ under the seating,” says Nick. “For dining tables it’s best to look for stability. When you push or lean on the table, ensure that it’s strong and doesn’t wobble because any movement will often get worse over time and suggests that the table is not great quality. You should also look out for thin timber veneers. If the veneer on the top is thin, then one scratch will reveal the MDF or chipboard underneath.”
