HB TALKS TO CHALK PAINT INVENTOR, COLOUR EXPERT AND AUTHOR ANNIE SLOAN ABOVE AND FINDS OUT HOW HER FAMILY ROOTS INFLUENCE HER PASSION AND STYLE
How did you first become interested in colour?
“I was lucky enough to grow up in an artistic household, which included a father who was a huge admirer of Gauguin’s work. The way he used the ‘wrong’ colours for his landscapes absolutely captivated my child’s mind and ignited my love for colour.”
What are your favourite colour combinations?
“I love using opposites together; using a balance between one cool tone, one warm tone, and a neutral one emphasises the depth of pigment in my colours by contrasting them deliciously.”
What are some creative ways to use paint in the home?
“Adding colour will help you to fall in love with your home again. Whether you use it to transform a piece of furniture completely, to disguise damage, or to try out a new trend, once you’ve started painting you’ll be overwhelmed by the urge to carry on.”
How would you describe your personal style?
“My family are a multicultural mixing pot and I like to reflect and celebrate that in my style. My interiors style also influences my wardrobe; I collect one-o pieces from my travels, source items from local artisans, and try to re-use and re-love what I have for as long as possible – whether that means darning or painting them!” For Annie Sloan paint stockists, visit anniesloan.com.
