Fi­nally, here we are, at the game that may not have been the first first-per­son shooter, but the game that inar­guably de­fined the FPS genre. Build­ing on the tech de­vel­oped for Hover­tank 3D and Cat­a­comb 3D the year be­fore, Car­mack and id Soft­ware gave us the fastest, smoothest first-per­son 3D any­one had ever seen. And they gave us Nazis and Mecha-Hitler to shoot. The FPS was born. Ex­cept even in 1992 we hadn’t yet started call­ing them first-per­son shoot­ers. That would come later.
