Un­til now the story of most FPSs amounted to lit­tle more than “shoot all the things”. Then along came up­start de­vel­oper Valve Soft­ware with, let’s not for­get, their de­but game and soon ev­ery new FPS needed a story that play­ers cared about, cin­e­matic scenes where play­ers re­tained con­trol of their char­ac­ter rather than be­ing shown a cut-scene, and a be­liev­able world pop­u­lated by be­liev­able char­ac­ters rather than just another level.
