ImagineFX

Sketchbook sensations

-

I don’t know how you do it, but the Sketchbook section in ImagineFX is constantly inspiring and amazing to look at. There’s been a great run recently: the emotive drawings that feature in Eliza Ivanova’s sketchbook, Sam Hogg’s original character art, and the unsettling creatures drawn by Dibujante Nocturno. All different styles and subject matter, yet with one thing in common: they’ve all been a feast for the eyes.

We’re all used to seeing finished art online and in real life, but I think there’s something magical in seeing raw ideas coming to life in an artist’s sketchbook. It doesn’t matter if the art’s loose or uncoloured – there’s still plenty of technical underpinnings to learn from. Although it’s always refreshing to read that an artist was doodling something just for fun – after all, isn’t that what art’s meant to be? Jonas, via email

Claire replies Yes! Yes it is Jonas. Sketchbook is one of ImagineFX’s enduring and much-loved features. It’s funny to think that it wasn’t a part of the magazine when it was launched back in 2006. I gave it a try in issue nine and asked the wonderful (and much missed) Francis Tsai to be our first artist to offer his scribbles up for scrutiny. The rest is history.

?? ?? Sam Hogg’s sketches from issue 167 made a big impression on reader Jonas. And we suspect he’s not alone in his admiration of our Sketchbook artists.
