‘Rocker’ rocking horse by Doshi Levien
The form: An hourglass shape in polyethylene attached to curved timber runners. What makes it special? Similar to most of the work by Londonbased design studio Doshi Levien, there is an obvious playfulness and unique design language in the Rocker. The designers decided not to completely reinvent the wheel, opting for traditional rocking-chair runners in the same general style as those found on Charles and Ray Eames’s famous rocking chairs, but the ‘seat’ is a wondrous concept. Made from rotation-moulded polyethylene, the seat resembles an hourglass on its side. This exquisitely simple shape can be imagined by its rider as a horse, boat or dragon – in fact just about anything. The Rocker won the Interior Innovation Award 2011 and is in the permanent collection of MoMa, New York. Expect to pay: $750. Buy at: Smow Australia, smow.com.au.
