1/ Skylights Three skylights with blockout blinds were installed above the kitchen. Architect John Liu of Inbetween Architectu­re (inbetweena­rchitectur­e.com.au) designed tapered, angled shafts to increase the quantity of natural light and minimise the hot afternoon sun. ‘Fakro FX 32/38’ fixed skylights, $670 each/678mm x 953mm, and ‘SRF-EX’ electric blockout blinds, $478 each, Attic Group, atticgroup.com.au. 2/ Cabinetry The black timber veneer cabinetry is finished with an acrylic polyuretha­ne coating for maximum durability. John estimates that the custom cabinetry for the kitchen cost around $50k. ‘Lignapal’ prefinishe­d timber veneer 180mm MDF pressed panels in Nero, from $138/sqm, George Fethers & Co., gfethers.com.au. 3/ Rangehoods The standout circular rangehoods were custom-made for the kitchen. This style vents upwards, so check this works for your space. Qasair ‘Albany Argyle D500L-2’ rangehoods, from $4500 each, Winning Appliances, winningapp­liances.com.au. 4/ Benchtops Black stone benchtops match the black cabinetry in the working part of the kitchen, while a clever wrap-around white bench adds lightness and provides table-height seating for casual meals. Caesarston­e benchtops in Raven and Organic White, from $500/sqm (including installati­on), Caesarston­e, caesarston­e.com.au. 5/ Flooring Tallowwood is a durable native hardwood with a yellow-green warmth and unique grain. Solid timber can be laid over concrete or joists, and then sanded and polished as one of the final steps in your reno. Expect to pay from $256/sqm (including installati­on) for highest-grade 85mm solid tallowwood flooring, SE Timber Chatswood, (02) 9904 7966. 6/ Chairs Interior designer Aldona Pajdak (apid.com.au) chose leather-upholstere­d chairs to add an element of warm, natural texture to the space. ‘Maggie’ chairs in Tan Leather with American Oak legs, $1250 each, Jardan, jardan.com.au. 7/ Dining table This trestle-style table provides plenty of space for the whole family, plus guests. All Jardan’s furniture is made in its Mount Waverley factory using sustainabl­y sourced materials. ‘Hunter’ 8-seater table in American Oak, $6873, Jardan, as before. 8/ Pendant lights Philippe Starck designed the ‘K Tribe’ light for Flos back in 2005 but its simple lines remain fresh. A series of small pendant lights hang above the island bench, with a larger pair over the dining table. Flos ‘K Tribe S2’ pendant lights in Smoke, from $770 each, Euroluce, euroluce.com.au. 9/ Mixer tap A pull-out function and swivel spout allows this mixer to be used easily in either of the two sinks, ensuring an easy clean-up. Gessi ‘Oxygene Hi-Tech’ sink mixer with pull-out dual spray, $1074, Abey, abey.com.au. 10/ Sinks The homeowners requested large sinks for a family-sized washing-up space, and they were set under the bench for a seamless look. Undermount­ed sinks can end up more expensive than drop-in models, as the benchtop material has to be finished around the cut out.
