‘Cirque’ stool by Martino Gamper for Gebrüder Thonet Vienna

The form: A stool with two or three interlocking hoops, depending on its height. What makes it special: A combination of faithful homage to the original and a surprising modern twist, the ‘Cirque’ stool was a hit the moment it was seen at Salone del Mobile in 2015. Available in various heights, the design works well in all of them, with the only variation a change from two to three leg hoops and a hoop as a backrest on the taller stool. The interlocking hoops may seem like a gimmick but they succeed as bracing for the legs and as a witty decorative feature. Italian designer Martino Gamper has a knack of making the everyday special and this is no difffferent. Steam-bent wood’s main feature is its ability to bend and his stool has the most complete bend possible – a full circle. Like an Olympic rhythmic gymnastic performance, it captures the seemingly impossible. Expect to pay: From $1246, with the bar stool version starting at $1449, dependent on wood finish/ colour. Two wood stain finishes in addition to natural beech are available, as are 15 lacquered colour options. Buy at: Space Furniture, spacefurni
