Beeline Design ‘Flow’ table

DESIGNERS: Adam Brislin & Lucy Grant Cabinetmaker Adam started Beeline Design after receiving multiple requests for bespoke pieces. Two years later, Lucy came on board, taking on the business side of the Melbourne-based brand. “We turned our focus to developing our first collection,” says Lucy. “We mostly work with sustainably sourced timber, but with each new range we introduce a new material, which serves as the ‘hero’ of the collection.” In the past, this has been copper, brass, leather – and this time, it’s powder-coated steel. The ‘Flow’ table (above) features a Tasmanian oak top and legs, supported by the steel frame in a playful Seafoam colour. “We called it Flow as a reference to the details where the leg and top should traditionally intersect,” says Lucy. “The top appears to be floating, creating a detail at this corner junction.” The pair is committed to creating investment pieces that don’t adhere to a particular style. “Our pieces evolve within their environment,” says Lucy. “They become classics in their own right.” $3800, beelinefurnituredesign.com.au.

Tide Design ‘Lyssna’ table

DESIGNER: George Harper After leaving behind an office career 10 years ago, George embarked on a two-year furniture-making course at Melbourne’s Box Hill Institute. Tide Design soon followed. Since then, the brand has developed a reputation for individuality and attention to detail. “All our furniture is made to order and can be customised,” he says. “We use American oak, Tasmanian oak and American walnut, and finish our furniture with natural oils.” Each piece is made in Tide’s Huntingdale workshop. The ‘Lyssna’ table (below) utilises an intricate three-way joinery technique to create the fluid leg structure. “The sinuous nature of the legs really appeals to me,” says George. “The word ‘listen’ kept popping into my head with this piece – we decided the Swedish equivalent had a better ring to it, so it became ‘Lyssna’.” From $3795, tidedesign.com.au.

The Wood Room ‘Orbit’ table

DESIGNERS: Simon Plowman & Kate Nicholson Based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Simon and Kate’s unique style is reflected in their laidback designs. “We’re inspired by simplicity and minimalism, and believe less is more,” says Kate. “Think clean, simple lines combined with blonde timber, organic curves and warm textures.” From humble beginnings in their garage, they now operate a Narrabeen showroom and factory in nearby Brookvale. Each piece is customisable, from the finish to the size. “Once we’ve determined the dimensions, each piece of timber for the table is joined together and cut into a perfect circle,” says Kate. The ‘Orbit’ table, named for the elliptical course of celestial objects around a star or planet, ranges from a diameter of 1.1 metres to 2.5 metres. “We love the simplicity and elegance of the circular table,” says Kate. “There’s a real sense of intimacy when sitting around it.” From $3350, thewoodroom.com.au.
