When you score a killer view, you have to make the most of it – and that’s what this second-floor deck in Clovelly, Sydney, does. It’s the centrepiece for the family living here, who spend every chance they get enjoying the breezy outlook. “An oversized elevated deck maximising the ocean view while maintaining privacy was imperative,” says architect Michelle Findlay. The facade is clad in spotted gum, which was chosen for its beautiful, weathered quality as it ages, and to link the space to the beach below. Texture is a driving force behind the design of the home.

Flanked sides will protect from the wind’s harsher elements in beachside locations and offer privacy. Incorporating panels that open allows air to circulate during the warmer months.
