Inside Out (Australia)

Sometimes houses speak to me...

- Eliza O’Hare EDITOR / FOLLOW ME @ELIZA_OH

When our creative director, Mia, showed me the house that’s on our cover this month, there was a feeling of instant recognition. It felt so right. This was a house that communicated so much about its owners, just through the design and materials. Briony and Ben Roberts’ beach house in Barwon Heads is a place with warm personality and is a great example of a perfect Inside Out home – it is modern, Australian and earthy, and includes smart elements of sustainable construction. You can turn to page 60 to admire it for yourself.

In this issue, you may also notice the introduction of Good News alerts on our home stories. We felt the need to call out the clever construction decisions that raise the sustainable and environmental focus of the architects, designers and homeowners we feature. Our Good News for April includes a house where the owners have adopted passive solar design, one with newly acquired hydronic heating, and one that now has pre-wiring in the garage for the electric cars the owners are planning to buy in future – all energy-saving and, ultimately, cost-saving choices for the homes.

Another welcome addition this month was the input of BuildHer, the combined forces of Rebeka Morgan and Kribashini Hannon, two women working together to help other women buy and renovate their own homes, guided by their unique roadmap to renovation. Turn to page 121 for more.

Enjoy!
