Architopia
Founded by Robert Duffield, Sophie Lindblom-Taylor and
Leon Morton in late 2020, Architopia is an online architecture platform that operates more like an online store than a traditional architecture studio.
“Our small architecture and interior-design team create functional, cost-efficient and environmentally responsible house designs – available online for one low flat fee,” says Leon. “Our process is deliberately simple. Anyone can browse and download any of our concept designs for free. Then when they’re ready, they can upgrade to one of our comprehensive architectural packages, find a builder and start building their dream home.”
After witnessing an increasing number of environmentally irresponsible homes being built in Australia, and clocking the frustration would-be home builders felt towards the lack of affordable and environmentally sustainable housing options, the trio decided to help fix the problem by allowing more Australians access to price- and eco-friendly architecture.
“More than 200,000 new homes are built in Australia every year, but only roughly 5% of them are designed by architects,” says Leon. “Sadly, this means that most new homes built in Australia today are poorly designed, mass produced, and energy hungry. The overall mission of Architopia is to raise the standard of new housing, to create a more environmentally responsible future, and to make the client-architect relationship more transparent and affordable. Simply put, we aim to provide Australians with a proven alternative to poorly designed, mass-produced housing.”
Architopia’s design packages start at $1950 and provide instant access to a comprehensive set of architectural plans. “All of our packages also include a detailed Design Pack,” says Robert.
“It illustrates how best to benefit from the house design and empowers the client with the knowledge and confidence needed to plan and build their ideal home.”
The best part of the deal is Architopia’s dedication to making sustainable housing more accessible. “Architopia focuses on sustainable, comfortable and healthy homes,” says Sophie.
“We apply passive-design principles to all of our designs, specify natural and non-toxic materials and finishes (Australian-made when we can) and spend considerable time optimising layouts to produce highly liveable small-footprint homes.”
