Get used to Jordan Spieth’s name high up on the Major odds board, with the 20-year-old confirming his status as golf’s breakout star at this year’s Masters. The kid has undeniable game, but there’s also an air of wish fulfilment swirling around him – American golf wants a new leading man, and this clean-cut Texan looks the part. Spieth, who first made a cut on the PGA Tour at 16, has long been ahead of the curve development-wise, but some last-round wobbles while in contention recently are a curious sign: just lack of experience, or indicator of a deeper technical or mental issue? Veteran pros have remarked at Spieth’s maturity level, the classic old head on young shoulders – whether it helps him to figure out the oldest form of golf, played on seaside links, remains to be seen.
