OLYMPIC Kingsway Sports Club has grand plans to raise its soccer profile in the northern suburbs.

The club is embarking on a $2.6 million redevelopment of its facilities at Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex, including building a 200-seat grandstand and installing floodlights.

Club president Steven Nelkovski said the club had a five-year plan and hoped to inspire the community, particularly children, to get involved in the sport.

“We always wanted to improve the facility and give the community something that will allow us to attract the highest possible (events),” he said.

“We would love to bring an FA Cup game to Kingsway. To get those games, we need the facilities.

“We expect works to start in the next few months and for that to be ready for the 2019 season.

“It’s going to be such a wonderful facility when it’s completed.”

The club started in 1953 and was based at various grounds around Perth before moving to the regional facility in Madeley.

It became Olympic Kingsway Sports Club in 1973.

Mr Nelkovski said the club had several players who had gone on to play for Perth Glory or Australia, including Stan Lazaridis, Richard and Michael Garcia, Chris and Jamie Coyne, Daniel De Silva, Jamie Harnwell and James Afkos.

He said the club had previously been part of a State league and wanted to rise to National Premier Leagues WA status.

“At the moment, within the City of Wanneroo there’s no facility that takes the criteria for NPL. The last time we were in the highest league (in WA) would have been in the late ’90s,” he said.

“Last year’s result was probably our best season in 15 years.”

Last month, Wanneroo councillors gave in-principle support to provide the club with $235,650 from its 2005 WA Treasury Corporation Loan for the grandstand and the club received a $250,000 Federal grant.

At the March 6 meeting, the council also agreed to enter a new lease with the club.
