Falcons take it up to resolute Dogs

SCHLOITHE GETS SOUTH OVER LINE

Joondalup Times - - WAFL -

WEST Perth turned around its poor form after a big loss to East Perth but fell just short of victory in an entertaining WAFL match against South Fremantle on Sunday.

Both teams were coming off near 10-goal defeats and their intent to make amends for those performances was apparent in their will for the contest at HBF Arena.

The lead wavered throughout the match, but it was the visitors who took the ascendancy at the game’s most crucial stage in a 15.6 (96) to 13.10 (88) victory.

The Falcons were one point down late in the final quarter and had the ball locked in attack but a resolute Bulldogs defence prevented the hosts mustering a score.

West Perth then conceded a poorly timed 50m penalty, which moved South Fremantle into its forward half, where the ball remained until the siren.

Reigning Sandover medallist Hayden Schloithe (28 disposals) kicked his fourth goal in the dying seconds to make it an eight-point margin.

The Falcons held a four-goal lead at quarter-time but South Fremantle pegged it back within 10 minutes of the second term and the game was an arm wrestle from then on.

West Perth midfielder Shane Nelson took a match-high 41 touches, while Tyler Keitel kicked three goals. The loss dropped the Falcons to seventh ahead of their clash against Swan Districts (second) at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday.
