Res­cuer is top vol­lie

WHIT­FORDS Vol­un­teer Ma­rine Res­cue Group’s Ken Blackie won the WA Vol­un­teer of the Year awards last week.

Mr Blackie, who was a found­ing mem­ber of the group, re­ceived the over­all award on May 24.

His nom­i­na­tion said he had been fun­da­men­tal to the group’s growth since 1972, when it started with a few lo­cals us­ing their own boats.

To­day, the group has 120 trained vol­un­teers who pro­vide a 24-hour, 365-day a year ser­vice to help peo­ple in dis­tress on the wa­ter.

Mr Blackie is also a vol­un­teer skip­per and has been in­volved in res­cues, re­cov­er­ies, miss­ing boat or peo­ple searches, boat as­sis­tance calls, cap­sizes and trans­fer of peo­ple in dis­tress to ar­eas of safety.
