Rescuer is top vollie
WHITFORDS Volunteer Marine Rescue Group’s Ken Blackie won the WA Volunteer of the Year awards last week.
Mr Blackie, who was a founding member of the group, received the overall award on May 24.
His nomination said he had been fundamental to the group’s growth since 1972, when it started with a few locals using their own boats.
Today, the group has 120 trained volunteers who provide a 24-hour, 365-day a year service to help people in distress on the water.
Mr Blackie is also a volunteer skipper and has been involved in rescues, recoveries, missing boat or people searches, boat assistance calls, capsizes and transfer of people in distress to areas of safety.
