Joy by name and nature
MAKING houses twinkle with Christmas cheer is Joy Clarke's greatest pleasure.
For years, she decorated her home in a spectacle of light and colour that drew people from all over Perth.
She began with a modest display of seven acrylic light-up reindeer on her front lawn in 2007, which grew quickly with an array of embellishments to become the most well-known Christmas exhibition in Lansdale. Year after year, visitors asked Mrs Clarke, “where do you get all your amazing decorations and lighting?”.
Helping others achieve the same look, she opened her own store, Mrs Claus Christmas Kingdom, in Joondalup in 2013.
Beginning as a small outlet on Winton Road, it later expanded to a larger nearby locale where it resides today as Perth's largest Christmas store.
Items include baubles, clothing, table decorations, tinsel and nativity scenes.
Each section is colourco-ordinated – all shades of pink are on-trend this season according to Mrs Clarke – to make choosing items as easy as possible.
“Many people break down in tears as they are just so overwhelmed when they walk in; it’s all about the experience, not just retail,” Mrs Clarke said.
“We have elves to greet you and make your shopping experience a memorable one. Our senior elf has been gifted with the most amazing memory for faces and can remember some of our customers who visit from year to year, welcoming them back for another year.”
Ensuring she sources special and unique festive products, Mrs Clarke travels the world hunting for items such as handmade glass baubles from Greece and lighting from China.
“My favourite thing about Christmas is seeing people’s faces when they enter the shop and knowing that I have created something that can make people happy,” she said.
“I also love making the trips around and seeing the Christmas lights along with celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
“As a child, I always used to love going out with my mum, visiting all the beautiful houses that were decorated with Christmas lights and had the dream that one day I would be able to do this.”
