THE City of Wanneroo plans to start its annual fox and rabbit control program on January 7.

The City has urged residents and visitors to obey signs and keep to formal tracks in reserves and foreshore conservation areas.

It reminded dog owners to keep pets on a leash at all times, or use designated dog exercise areas.

The program will be done within foreshore conservation reserves at Quinns Rocks and Mindarie, as well as selected reserves in the Central and South wards.

The program aims to reduce the number of feral rabbits that cause damage to coastal dunes, bushland vegetation and rehabilitation sites, as well as reduce foxes preying on native fauna.

According to its website, the City uses calicivirus or rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus, Pindone oats or rabbit warren control for rabbit control.

It said the City contracted animal pest management specialists to use soft foot hold traps to control foxes and did not use baits.
