No fak­ing the funk

THE sounds of funk and soul are headed to Kin­ross in the new year.

The first of the City of Joon­dalup’s free Mu­sic in the Park con­certs will fea­ture Cheap Fakes and The Iso­lites at Falk­land Park on Satur­day, Jan­uary 12.

The Iso­lites – com­plete with horns and a rhythm sec­tion – will de­liver the up­beat and happy sounds of Ja­maica and the Caribbean from the 1960s, while Bris­bane’s Cheap Fakes’ set list will be pep­pered with a mix of soul and brass-fu­elled pop, funk and ska tunes.

Mayor Al­bert Ja­cob said the Mu­sic in the Park con­certs con­tin­ued to be pop­u­lar with the lo­cal com­mu­nity, par­tic­u­larly young fam­i­lies.

“The lo­ca­tions and mu­si­cal acts may have changed over the years, but this free-fam­ily-friendly fes­ti­val of mu­sic re­mains as pop­u­lar now as ever,” he said.

Guests can bring a pic­nic or buy food on the night. Chil­dren’s ac­tiv­i­ties run from 5pm with the con­cert from 6pm to 8.30pm.

SUM­MER SES­SIONS

THE City of Joon­dalup's Sum­mer Ses­sions will re­turn this month with free ac­tiv­i­ties for young peo­ple aged 11 to 17. Held on Wed­nes­days, the ac­tiv­i­ties will in­clude in­flat­a­bles, art work­shops, sports, archery at­tack, mu­sic and DJs.

The ses­sions will run from 1pm to 7pm on Jan­uary 9 at Tom Simp­son Park, Mul­laloo and Jan­uary 23 at the Sor­rento fore­shore, and from 3pm to 7pm on Jan­uary 16 at Bel­don Park and Jan­uary 30 at Ju­niper Park, Dun­craig.

This will be the first time a ses­sion has been hosted on Sor­rento beach. All events are smoke, drug and al­co­hol-free. chart the his­tory of map­ping and sur­vey­ing this month. The City of Wan­neroo will present 'You Have to Draw the Line Some­where' at Wan­neroo Re­gional Mu­seum from Jan­uary 12, high­light­ing the im­por­tant role that sur­vey­ors play.

His­to­ri­ans be­lieve early map­ping and sur­vey­ing orig­i­nated in an­cient Egypt and the first doc­u­mented land own­er­ship and bound­ary records date back to 3000BC. Since then, maps have rep­re­sented the world in two di­men­sions. Sur­vey­ors work on a di­verse range of projects from plan­ning and de­sign of land de­vel­op­ment to con­struc­tion of in­fra­struc­ture such as build­ings, roads, bridges, sports fields and farms.
