Aly leads way with award
FEDERAL Labor MP Anne Aly urged people from different backgrounds to get involved in politics after being recognised for her advocacy against domestic violence and right-wing extremism.
The Cowan MHR received the 2020 McKinnon Prize in emerging political leadership, which recognised politicians with less than five years in office.
Dr Aly, who began her career in education and multicultural affairs policy for the WA Government and was the first Muslim woman elected to Federal Parliament, is considered a global authority on understanding why young people are drawn into violent extremism.
After disclosing her personal experience with domestic violence in 2020, Dr Aly advocated for a national campaign against such violence and for governmentsponsored safe housing.
She is a key member of a Parliamentary grouping for Action to Reduce Violence Against Women and Children. Last year Dr Aly worked to bring forward an inquiry into the rise of rightwing extremism.
“I hope it encourages more people – particularly women and those in diverse communities – to understand that public service... is open to anyone,” she said.
