Swim death prompts warn­ing

A 29-YEAR-old man has died af­ter he dis­ap­peared while swim­ming in the Moore River in Guilder­ton.

About 7.30pm on Mon­day night the man went miss­ing while swim­ming with a friend near a pon­toon.

WA Po­lice Air­wing and Lancelin Vol­un­teer Marine Res­cue searched the area.

The body of the man was lo­cated about 10.30pm.

Lancelin po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the cir­cum­stances sur­round­ing the death and a re­port will be pre­pared for the Coro­ner.

“We of­fer our deep­est con­do­lences to the fam­ily and friends of the young man,” Shire of Gin­gin Pres­i­dent Sam Col­lard said.

“It is a tragic loss of a young life.”

Lancelin po­lice Sergeant Steve McCrae urged peo­ple to be care­ful in the wa­ter.

“This ter­ri­ble tragedy is a timely re­minder to our com­mu­ni­ties to be ex­tra dili­gent around wa­ter, whether swim­ming at a river, beach, pool or other wa­ter body,” he said.

“It is so im­por­tant to know your lim­its when you’re in the wa­ter and use flota­tion de­vices if you need to.

“We ex­tend our sin­cer­est sym­pa­thy to the young man’s fam­ily.”
