Long road to recovery

A STRETCH of road in Hazelmere plagued by potholes and flooding will not be upgraded until State and Federal governments commit to funding the Lloyd Street bridge extension.

City of Swan chief executive Mike Foley said road and drainage design upgrades were complete for the section of Stirling Crescent from Lakes Road to Bushmead Road but until an alternative route was established, it would remain as is.

“Stirling Crescent upgrades will be funded by the City in future budgets, however the work cannot take place as this is a high wide loads route under the control of Main Roads WA,” he said.

“The road is not wide enough to allow upgrading at the same time as allowing access for high wide loads.”

Mr Foley called on Federal and State governments to commit to funding the extension of the Lloyd Street Bridge so the new road network could connect Hazelmere to Midland.

“We’re currently seeking funding to upgrade the key routes in that precinct, including extending the Lloyd Street Bridge over the Helena River to connect to Midland which will reduce traffic and travel time,” he said.

Mr Foley said there was a project in the 2018-19 capital works program to build a temporary connection from Lakes Road to the newly-built section of Lloyd Street from Bushmead Road to Lakes Road.

“We are working with Main Roads’ HWL section to gain approval to deviate large and oversize traffic along this new section of road,” he said.

No fix in sight for a road in Hazelmere that is filled with potholes and prone to flooding.
