Kambalda Amateur Swimming Club volunteer Julia Roberts has won the national Swimming Australia’s Optus Local Legend of the Year award.

Representing WA, Ms Roberts was honoured at the Swimming Australia Gala Awards Night held in Melbourne a fortnight ago for her tireless commitment to the local swimming club.

She has been a stalwart of the club for more than a decade and although she is officially the recorder and registrar, she has chipped in with numerous other duties to keep the club running smoothly.

Ms Roberts said representing the State was an honour but she really did not believe she had any chance of scooping the coveted accolade.

“I really wasn’t expecting it at all so I was definitely in a bit of shock, it was a bit surreal,” she said.

“I thought we were just going over just because I had won the WA award and I thought we were just going as part of the prize.

“We got there and they told me I had to go here and there and the next thing I got the award. I was in shock actually, it was pretty crazy.”
