Triple delight for Barnewall, Shore
Goldfields speedway duo Jack Barnewall and Dean Shore justified a trip to Esperance last weekend to grab a third Street Stocks 20/20 Challenge title.
The well-known KalgoorlieBoulder drivers edged fast-finishing siblings Josh and Hamish Macalpine.
Another Goldfields combination, Bob Wakefield and Peter Walker, finished third.
A mixed bag of placings meant there was no clear favourite heading into the last of the heats, with 11 nominations advancing to the feature. It was not, however, plain sailing for Wade Rigney and Sean Barrett, with a hard hit in traffic taking them to the infield.
Zane Humphrys also had a greeting with the wall in a last-ditch bid to go on the outside of the final placers.
It was a desperate effort to grab a podium finish, with two cars unable to finish. Shore set the pace early, cruising through the first 20 laps and paving the way for Barnewall to grab a big advantage heading into the last 20.
It also set the tone for a bumperto-bumper clash in front between Barnewall and Hamish Macalpine.
Macalpine led, but halfway through the 20 laps, the class of Barnewall lifted him to a rousing victory and extended a superb record in the event.
Three wins with Shore and two alongside Aaron Murphy make Barnewall a five-time winner in seven annual 20/20 challenges.
Jack Barnewall in No.16 holds off Hamish Macalpine in the Street Stocks 20/20 Challenge.
