IT was the end of an era when demolition works started on the old Mersey Point Timber Jetty on Monday. Marine civil contractor SMC Marine was tasked with removing the damaged jetty. The jetty, which was long used to ferry passengers to Penguin Island, recently suffered structural damage during bad weather and was closed to the public. Mayor Barry Sammels said the jetty has been a key part of the coastline for many years. Thousands of people used to line up on the jetty to visit Penguin Island. “While SMC Marine will oversee the removal of the jetty, parts of it will live on as some of the piles and timbers will be retained by the City and reused for interpretive art projects,” Mr Sammels said.
