CHILDREN are learning to read with the help of a canine friend.

Story Dogs is a not-forprofit organisation that runs a literary program in which children read books out loud to a dog.

Kwinana co-ordinator Christina McCaulay said dogs provided a gentle, nonjudgemental space for children to learn to read.

About 60 volunteers from WA and SA converged on the Navy Club in Peron with dogs in tow on the weekend.

“It was a great day and amazing to see so many dogs; there were at least 40 together in the one place,” Ms McCaulay said.

Mrs McCaulay and her labrador Jasmine help children from St Vincent’s and Honeywood primary schools to read.
