CHAMPION Tongala clay bird shooter Steve Atkins was chasing some really big money during the annual four-day claybird shoot in Darwin last week . . . and he didn’t even have a gun his hand.

With one of the four wins he enjoyed in the shoot’s nine events Steve qualified for a chance to win $100,000.

‘‘You had to draw cards and when you’ve got five cards the same colour you win something. There were yellow, green, orange and blue cards and to win the $100,000 you had to get five blue cards, which was always going to be hard because there was only five of them so it was a longshot.

‘‘But for a while I thought I was in line maybe to pick up $25,000, which was the prize if you picked five orange cards.

‘‘But I ended up with five yellow cards from my draws so I had to be satisfied with $2000, which was still good,’’ said Steve.

Steve was more than happy with his shooting form at the event, with four wins from the nine events.

‘‘I went up there (Darwin) 37 years ago and did very well so it was nice to go back and show I can still do it after all those years,’’ added Steve.
