Owen’s cup joy

FORMER Kyabramite Owen Kelly savoured his big­gest win as a race­horse owner re­cently when a gal­loper called Yogi won the listed $150,000 Sandown Cup.

Owen also had the thrill of ac­cept­ing the cup af­ter the race on be­half of the other 10 own­ers.

Af­ter spend­ing his early years in Kyabram where he did his school­ing, Owen went on to spend time in Gipp­s­land and Shep­par­ton. Owen was also Shep­par­ton Win TV boss for some years be­fore run­ning an ad­ver­tis­ing agency with Kyabram’s Stephen Vick.

Yogi is pre­pared by wizard Bal­larat trainer Dar­ren Weir and is cur­rently spell­ing. His next main mis­sion is the Syd­ney Cup next Easter.

Owen has also en­joyed suc­cess as an owner of Stan­dard­breds and was in a syn­di­cate that raced the out­stand­ing David Aiken-trained pac­ers Smudge Bro­mac and Wartime Sweet­heart.
