Owen’s cup joy
FORMER Kyabramite Owen Kelly savoured his biggest win as a racehorse owner recently when a galloper called Yogi won the listed $150,000 Sandown Cup.
Owen also had the thrill of accepting the cup after the race on behalf of the other 10 owners.
After spending his early years in Kyabram where he did his schooling, Owen went on to spend time in Gippsland and Shepparton. Owen was also Shepparton Win TV boss for some years before running an advertising agency with Kyabram’s Stephen Vick.
Yogi is prepared by wizard Ballarat trainer Darren Weir and is currently spelling. His next main mission is the Sydney Cup next Easter.
Owen has also enjoyed success as an owner of Standardbreds and was in a syndicate that raced the outstanding David Aiken-trained pacers Smudge Bromac and Wartime Sweetheart.
