KYABRAM P-12 College’s Human Powered Vehicle team walked away from the Maryborough Energy Breakthrough with a bronze medal in the TryAthlon Open event.

The Energy Breakthrough is an annual event providing opportunities for students, teachers, parents and local industry to work together to design and construct a vehicle, a machine or innovation in technology that will represent an ‘energy breakthrough’.

The P-12 College team competed in a vehicle that was a recumbent bicycle on the inside with a slick air-piercing look on the outside.

After three days of competition that included a 20-minute presentation to judges, an informal conversation test and finally an eight-hour race, the boys finished just 0.5 points off second place.

“The boys completed 207 laps of the 1.1km course in their eight hour race which was an incredible achievement,” coordinating teacher Lionel Curling said.

‘‘I want to thank all the families involved and the community for taking an interest in the event.

‘‘Also, thanks to my fellow coordinator Jamie Harding for all his help.

“We had a few minor crashes but overall the boys did an amazing job.”

The team is already eyeing off more competitions in the future, while also looking to add a few more members to their group of six.
