TONGALA FITNESS CENTRE ON TRACK

-

IT’S on your marks, get set, go for Tongala’s community fitness track.

Construction will kick off these school holidays at Tongala Primary School for the muchanticipated 400m running track, with an exercise circuit featuring 18 fitness stations to be installed in the June/July holidays.

The project was part of the state government Pick My Project initiative, with the school receiving a $109,500 grant in October after notching 264 votes.

A group of committed locals rallied for the community’s support throughout the online voting process — and their hard work paid off.

‘‘In Tongala there’s nothing really available for people to get fit, there are no external places for people to come to,’’ Tongala Primary School principal Rob Hogan said.

‘‘Many locals have been running around the roads to keep themselves fit.

‘‘But we’ve got the space here at the school, we have large ovals that can be used. So that’s why this project is taking place.’’

The exercise circuit will include sit-up benches, chin-up bars, dips and climbing frames among its 18 stations.

The circuit and running track will be part of the brand spanking new Tongala Community Fitness Centre, which will also include a water bubbler, shade sails and seating.

‘‘This is a great project for the school and the wider community and will hopefully encourage further health and fitness in town,’’ Campaspe Shire councillor Neil Pankhurst said. ‘‘We’re very fortunate the primary school received the Pick My Project funding, it’s great to see small communities benefit.’’
