Tough for Tonny
Youthful team outclassed by Moama,
IN PREVIOUS seasons, a Moama and Tongala netball match would have been one for the ages.
In 2019, things have changed.
The Moama juggernaut is still at the peak of its powers, but Tongala has changed direction.
Rather than a tight contest, the young Tongala team was comprehensively beaten by the Mowers to the tune of 44 goals.
And while it may take some time for Tongala observers to adjust to the fact their team may not be competing for a top spot anymore, it’s a position new coach Caddison Mulholland is embracing.
‘‘We knew this was going to be a tough match,’’ she said.
‘‘Moama are obviously the benchmark of the competition, they play incredible netball and are always going to be hard to beat.
‘‘What we took away from it as a side was experience. We have a really young group who want to be a great side in coming seasons, so there is a lot we can learn from Moama.’’
Mulholland said she took a lot of faith from her team remaining positive throughout.
‘‘Our focus was on the team, not the scoreboard,’’ she said.
‘‘It was important for our players to play to our structures. That’s not easy against a side as good as Moama, but our girls kept their heads, they played the way we want to play and provided a lot of positives for the remainder of the season.’’
For Moama, things just kept rolling on. Co-coach Alex Daly said it was yet another strong performance.
‘‘We were really happy with the win,’’ she said.
‘‘We played a really good style of netball, which is fantastic. We have a few young girls like Chelsea Wright debuting in A grade and Jayda Richardson who is only 15 but is starting to find her feet, so we were really happy to be able to give some more experience to those players.’’
Moama will take on Nathalia this week, though the players already have an eye a week ahead.
‘‘We hope to have a really good hitout this week and then we have a big game coming up on Good Friday against United, so it’s a big few weeks for us,’’ said Daly.
Tongala hosts Numurkah in round two.
