Some players remain a mystery

-

This Kyabram football team photo believed to have been taken circa 1934.

Wilf Cox was captain of Kyabram’s Goulburn Valley Team between 1933 and 1936 and is shown to be captain in this photograph.

The names written on the back of the photograph are as follows;

Back row: R Seamons, unknown, Ernie Whitbourne, F Moyle, unknown, M Mcqueen, unknown, Jim Whitbourne, F Brennan, J Hurley, unknown.

Middle row: T Anderson, W Moore, Greg O’meara, unknown, Wilf Cox, unknown, B Howard, unknown, unknown.

Front: unknown, ? Fuller, J Garrett, J Drum, unknown, H Bird.

I have been through the football season write-ups in the Kyabram Free Press between 1933 and 1936 to find information for those years.

In 1934 Kyabram competed in the following:

GOULBURN VALLEY LEAGUE (Firsts): Teams from Kyabram, Mooroopna, Murchison, Shepparton, Rushworth and Tatura.

KYABRAM DISTRICT ASSOCIATION: Teams from Girgarre, Kyabram Saturdays, Lancaster, Merrigum-byrneside, Stanhope and Wyuna.

KYABRAM WEDNESDAY JUNIOR is

LEAGUE: This Junior League was formed later in the football season, with the first match played in late May 1934. It was formed for players under the age of 20 years. There were only three teams: Imperials, Rovers and Robins.

At least three of the players in this Junior League are in the photograph: Ernie Whitbourne (aged 16 years), Jim Whitbourne (18) and H Bird (17). They were regular names mentioned in the goal kicking and best players.

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone was able to identify any of the unknown players in this photograph, which would be both helpful to the Kyabram Historical Society and the Kyabram Football Club records. Please contact Eileen Sullivan on 0423 504 328 if you are able to help.
