Lions in battle to hold a spot

- By Gus Underwood

Although currently holding third place on the ladder, Stanhope has the most challenging run to holds its spot in the Kyabram District League finals when the season resumes its season this Saturday after a threeweek COVID-19 enforced break.

With four home-andhome games remaining, seven sides are batting for positions either within the top six or to make the top six.

But the only three games scheduled for this Saturday when the season resumes won’t have any significant impact on the ladder positions.

But the last three rounds will and Stanhope, currently third on the ladder but only one game and percentage clear of seventh-placed Merrigum, could still miss the finals.

After the bye this Saturday, the Lions have to confront reigning premier and fourth-placed Nagambie (away), second positioned Avenel (home) and seventh rung holders Merrigum (home) in its last three games and may have to win all of them to guarantee its finals place.

Merrigum also the bye this week, then tackles fifth-placed Murchisontoolamba (home), Shepparton East (away) and

Stanhope (away) in the run to the finals.

Merrigum is level on premiership points with sixth-placed Violet Town but trails that side by 13 per cent and is unlikely to build significantly on its percentage in its last three games. So it will need to win at least two of them to be a chance to slip into the top six.

Violet Town is really under the pump to holds its spot in the top six and may have to beat unbeaten Lancaster or Nagambie in its last three games to be a chance.

Fifth-placed Murchisontoolamba has to face Merrigum on Saturday week but has non-finalists Shepparton United and Ardmona in its last two games which should ensure it of a finals spot.

Second positioned Avenel has Rushworth, Stanhope and Lancaster in its last three games but is a game clear of Murchisontoolamba, Violet Town and Merrigum so looks safe to play finals.
