Finals side takes shape

- By Gus Underwood

Coach Jordan Souter is looking to start settling Tongala’s senior football team for the finals when the Murray League season resumes this Saturday.

The Blues take on fifth placed Congupna, a side they had the measure of in an earlier season confrontation by 36 points.

A win on Saturday should just about ensure an unbeaten home-andaway season for the Blues as they would be expected to win their last two games against teams well below them on the ladder — Numurkah and Moama.

Souter said if COVID-19 conditions don’t alter, Anthony Dennis might be the only player certain to play finals who will miss this Saturday’s clash.

‘‘He is recovering from a hammy (hamstring injury) and may miss a couple more games but will be back for the finals,’’ Souter said.

Souter said the club’s Northern Territory fly-in stars in Cam Ilett, goalkicking machine Darren Ewing and ruckman Jack Monigatti will play this Saturday and, COVID-19 conditions permitting, for the remainder of the season as the Blues mount their bid to win their first Murray League flag.

Souter admitted the Blues’ unbeaten streak may have been in danger of being broken if the most recent COVID-19 lockdown hadn’t occurred.

‘‘We were to play (second placed) Cobram on the first week of the lockdown and we had about six players injured at that time so we would have been fully tested,’’ added Souter.
