The new Navy Ensign was assigned to a submarine, a vessel on which he had dreamed of serving since he was a small boy. He was trying desperately to impress the Master in Command with his expertise and knowledge learned in submarine school about the extensive list of safety procedures required before opening the hatch.
The Master in Command cut him off quickly and said, ‘'Listen son, it is really simple. Just add the number of times we dive to the number of times we surface, then divide that number by two. If the answer doesn't come out as an even number, DON'T OPEN THE HATCH.”
