Roos win could be costly

- By Aydin Payne

A gutsy five-goal win over fellow top-four outfit Shepparton East has come at a cost for Girgarre.

Playing coach Abby Pettifer suffered a potential season-ending injury in the dying seconds of her side's 43-38 triumph at Central Park Reserve.

Pettifer, in her first season at the helm of Girgarre, went down clutching her lower leg moments before the siren blew to end the game.

It is another cruel blow for the Kangaroos, with the outfit already missing defender Jacqui Gahan due to an Achilles injury.

Saturday's round 15 win has lifted Girgarre into second spot on the Kyabram District League A-grade ladder.

The game lived up to its pre-match hype, as two of the best sides in the competition battled it out.

Neither side was able to gain the upper hand in the first half, with the momentum changing back and forth in quick succession.

Girgarre managed to hold a slim 21-20 lead at the main break.

The scoring dried up in the third term with both outfits’ defensive ends standing up.

With the scores tied on 28-apiece at the last break the scene was set for a classic finish.

The away side capitalised on costly turnovers and extended its lead to five goals early in the last term.

But the Eagles were able to dig deep as they clawed back the deficit to two goals.

Classy work from Pip Inglis, Holly Butler and Rebecca Squire helped get the ball back down the other end into the hands of Pettifer and Danielle Jones.

Shepparton East had strong performances from Leticia Keady and Amy Reid, while youngster Mia Jeffery performed well.

Merrigum enjoyed a crucial 60-47 victory over Murchison-toolamba.

In the battle for sixth spot, the Bulldogs were able to flex their muscles and run out convincing winners by 13 goals.

Dookie United has leapfrogged Shepparton East on the ladder following its dominant win over Undera.

The Thunder powered past the Lions with a 70-26 rout.

Ladder leader Tallygaroopna was emphatic against Ardmona, running out a 91-16 winner on Saturday.

Nagambie cruised to a comfortable 57-41 win over Stanhope, while Avenel recorded a 56-27 salute over Rushworth.

Lancaster and Violet Town are scheduled to meet on Sunday.
