HE’S BACK!

- By Gus Underwood

The most successful coach in Victorian country football history is returning to lead the Kyabram Bombers in 2022.

Paul Newman is emerging from two years in retirement to take the coaching reins from current joint coaches Brad Edwards and Mick Mattingly who are stepping down.

Edwards is taking a break from coaching after a challenging two years in charge while reigning Morrison medalist Mattingly, who is sharing the role with Edwards this year, is moving to Adelaide to prepare for a career with West Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League. Newman will have current star Lachie Smith and current Girgarre

coach Billy Barnes as his playing deputies.

Newman said he had taken on the job again because he felt refreshed after a two-year break from the game.

‘‘I missed it (coaching) and I’ve got the passion back to do it again and I’m really looking forward to it,’’ he said.

Newman said he was not concerned about tarnishing his amazing coaching record in which he suffered only one defeat in 84 games over four seasons which produced three flags and a runner-up finish and included a Victorian record streak of 62 consecutive wins.

‘‘I’m not into records that much so I won’t be too concerned about that,’’ added Newman.

Newman said he felt for Brad Edwards who succeeded him as coach after the Bombers beat Echuca for the 2019 flag.

‘‘Brad has had to put up with a lot in what has happened in the past two seasons and has done a really good job in the circumstances,’’ Newman added.

Newman sees a bright future for the Bombers and has already been locking in players and former players for next season.

He has already got commitment from multi-premiership players ruck star Jake Reeves and Lachie Smith - to play again next year along with veteran Kayne Pettifer and midfield dynamo Zac Keogh who is in his first season with the club.

Lachie Smith will again be one Newman’s assistants along with Billy Barnes.

Newman is also hoping utility star Luke Morris, who had not played this year, will be fit enough to return next season.

‘‘There are few more players I haven’t spoken to yet, but I’ll be getting around to all of them in time,’’ Newman said.

Newman said he would also be promoting the younger players in the club and provide them with every chance to establish themselves as regular senior players.

‘‘I think everything is looking good for the future of the club and I’m excited about it,’’ added Newman.
